Evaluation and Computer Aided Planning of Assembly System Reuse

T. Fleschutz, R. Harms, G. Seliger, “Evaluation and Computer Aided Planning of Assembly System Reuse”, Proceedings of the 2008 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Human-Machine Systems, March 9-12, 2008, Athens, Greece, pp. 531-536.

The potential of assembly equipment is often not utilized throughout its life cycle. The reuse of equipment allows stakeholders to exploit the unused potential and to comply with both the economic objective of increasing cost efficiency and the ecological objective of high resource efficiency. Within the European Integrated Project PISA a survey was conducted to identify challenges and potentials of reuse. The inexperience of the producers and users of assembly equipment with the reuse process, the insufficiently designed and prepared equipment, the missing life-cycle data as well as missing holistic planning concepts for the reuse where identified as obstacles. In order to meet these challenges, existing methods for financial valuation and ecological assessment have been applied to reuse cases in order to verify their adequacy. To facilitate profitable reuse, a knowledge base system and a computer aided reuse planning application, with which the exchange of information between experts and information systems can be conducted, is being developed.
