Evaluation of the Reconfiguration and Reuse of Assembly Equipment

T. Fleschutz, R. Harms, G. Seliger, F. Rusina, F. Bottero, "Evaluation of the Reconfiguration and Reuse of Assembly Equipment", Proceedings of 2nd CIRP Conference on Assembly Technology and Systems, September 2008, University of Windsor, Toronto.

Abstract: This paper summarizes a survey between end users and system integrators of
production systems on reuse and reconfiguration and proposes strategies for
the involved players based on a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses,
Opportunities and Threats) analysis. A cost analysis of two real reuse cases
from industrial partners is presented, which shows high cost reduction
potentials between 30 and 80 %, due to the reuse of production components
or systems. Successful developments of reconfigurable and reusable
assembly equipment of industrial partners are described. Finally, the
evaluation of an exemplary industrial solution with real options is presented
and compared with traditional net present value calculations regarding its
adequacy for investment decisions.
